Home Renovation: Square Feet, Square Metres & More

Calculate room sizes, flooring, paint coverage, and tiles with our DIY measurement guide for home renovations.

Whether you're calculating flooring, estimating paint coverage, or comparing property sizes internationally, understanding area measurements is essential for home renovation. This guide covers practical conversions for DIY projects and property comparisons.

Square Feet vs Square Metres

The two most common area units for property:

  • 1 square metre (m²) = 10.764 square feet (ft²)
  • 1 square foot (ft²) = 0.0929 square metres (m²)

Quick mental math: multiply square metres by 10.8 to get approximate square feet, or divide square feet by 10.8 for square metres.

Calculating Room Area

For rectangular rooms, multiply length × width in the same units:

  • Room 4m × 3m: 12 m² ≈ 129 ft²
  • Room 12ft × 10ft: 120 ft² ≈ 11.1 m²

For L-shaped rooms, divide into rectangles, calculate each area, then add them together.

Flooring Coverage

When buying flooring, add 10-15% extra for waste and cuts:

  • Laminate/vinyl planks: Add 10% for rectangular rooms, 15% for angled cuts
  • Carpet: Usually sold by square metre or linear metre (check width)
  • Tiles: Add 10-15% for cuts and breakage

Example: A 20m² room needs 22-23m² of flooring to account for waste.

Paint Coverage

Wall paint coverage varies by quality:

  • Standard emulsion: 10-12 m² per litre (one coat)
  • Premium paint: 12-14 m² per litre
  • Primer: 8-10 m² per litre

For walls, calculate: (room perimeter × wall height) - window/door areas. Two coats are usually needed, so double your paint estimate.

Tile Quantity Calculator

To calculate tiles needed:

  • Measure area in m² (length × width)
  • Divide by single tile area (e.g., 0.3m × 0.3m = 0.09 m² per tile)
  • Add 10-15% for cuts and breakage

Example: 10 m² floor with 30×30cm tiles: 10 ÷ 0.09 = 111 tiles + 15% = ~128 tiles needed.

Property Size Comparisons

Common property sizes for reference:

  • Small flat: 40-50 m² = 430-540 ft²
  • Average 2-bed flat: 60-75 m² = 645-810 ft²
  • 3-bed house: 100-130 m² = 1,076-1,400 ft²
  • Large family home: 180-250 m² = 1,940-2,690 ft²

Garden and Land Measurements

For larger areas:

  • 1 acre = 4,047 m² = 43,560 ft² ≈ 0.4 hectares
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 107,639 ft² ≈ 2.47 acres

A typical UK garden is 150-300 m² (1,600-3,200 ft²). A football pitch is approximately 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres).

Tips for Accurate Measuring

  • Use a laser measure: More accurate than tape for rooms
  • Measure to alcoves: Include recesses and bay windows in floor area
  • Draw a sketch: Note all dimensions on a simple floor plan
  • Double-check units: Confirm whether measurements are in metres or feet
  • Account for obstacles: Subtract area for fitted furniture if not moving
